NOW

Alto and soprano saxophonist Jukka Perko is one of Europe's premier jazz artists, who first attracted attention in 1986, when at 18 he made his debut at Finland's biggest jazz event, the Pori Jazz Festival. Jukka Perko's rapid ascent to international fame began a year later when the legendary Dizzy Gillespie invited him to join his big band on tour. Perko's talent was compared to the young Charlie Parker and won him rave reviews. Now the jazz rhythms and free flow of ideas that define Perko's art come together with the heartbeat of traditional Finnish music - from the powerful harmony of hymns to the tangos of Olavi Virta. Jukka Perko is also a sought-after soloist in symphony orchestras and his album of hymn arrangements entitled 'Kaanaanmaa' (2002) has sold nearly 25,000 copies in Finland. In 2010 he received the award of the Finnish Cultural Foundation.

Jukka Perko is back on Blue Note and is releasing two different albums this year (2012). Last spring he came out with his third hymn-based album called ‘Avara’ with his trio. Late September sees the release of his first album that contains jazz classics by his quartet called ‘Jukka Perko Streamline Jazztet’. More to come.
