Where are they now

NOW

The Espoo Big Band shows off the best of each of its musicians who are used in solos while the band achieves an impressive harmony with its solid group spirit. The Espoo Big Band is at the same time classical and original and is not only an orchestra for jazz lovers, but for all music lovers. The Espoo Big Band only plays music exclusively composed for it, making each concert a unique experience. The band was founded in 1980 by Martti "Mape" Lappalainen who suddenly passed away in 2011 after having taken care of the band and its ‘April Jazz’ festival (founded in 1986) since their beginnings. His successor is Marzi Nyman, a spectacular guitar and piano player, arranger and composer who was here with the band in Nov 2006 when they played the music of fine Finnish composers: Jukka Linkola, Sakari Kukko, Pekka Pohjola and Jarmo Saari. A former trombone player in the band and the new organiser of ‘April Jazz’, Matti Lappalainen (not related), talks us through the band’s transitional period.
