Alex Tam, tenor

A graduate of the Opera Course at the Royal Academy of Music in London and the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, Alex Tam is an opera singer, conductor, and composer who has taken leading roles in operas, concerts, and other productions worldwide. He has performed over 30 operatic roles, including his first major role at the age of 19 as Rinuccio in Gianni Schicchi, followed by leading roles in The Barber of Seville, Così fan tutte, L’elisir d'amore, La fille du régiment, Orphée aux enfers, Mozart und Salieri, Turandot, The Bartered Bride, Madama Butterfly, and many other operas.

Alex appeared as a soloist in Bach’s Mass in B minor and Mozart’s Mass in C with Maestro Helmuth Rilling, Bach’s Magnificat and St. Matthew Passion, Beethoven’s Missa Solemnis, Symphony No. 9, Lloyd Webber’s Requiem, Mozart’s Requiem, Handel’s Judas Maccabaeus and Messiah, Carl Orff’s Catulli Camina, and Bob Chilcott’s Requiem. At Le French May 2000, Alex gave a duo recital with French soprano Elisabeth Videl. Alex was invited to perform leading roles in the Hong Kong Arts Festival 2002 and 2013, for Coffee Cantata and the contemporary chamber opera Heart of Coral. In 2014, Alex was appointed Chorus Master of a Guinness World Record–breaking event, ODE TO JOY – Concert of Ten Thousand, co-presented by RTHK, the Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups, and Opera Hong Kong.

Alex is currently conducting the Opera Hong Kong Chorus, HKAPA Choir, and Hong Kong Children’s Choir. He is also voice teacher at the HKAPA.
