楊官:

您好!我想問一下,experience同experiences在用法上有甚麼分別?有時我都混淆不清。例如,I have much experience(s) in... She has past experience(s) of ...。 謝謝!

Betty

' experience ' noun singular
' experiences ' noun plural - not often used .

Oxford Dictionary does not refer to experiences , but Collins Cobuld Dictionary includes 'experiences '

You can say , ' my experiences over many years make me wiser.' Or ' I gained a lot of experience over the years .'

As to your two sentenses , the first is correct without the 's' . The second is OK , but English speakers rarely say it this way . I'd suggest ' she has had a lot of past experience '

Dear Mr Yang,

Is there any difference between these two sentences?

"There isn't any car."
"There aren't any cars."

Also, These two questions.

"Is there any car on the road?"
"Are there any cars on the road?"

"Each pair seems to have the same meaning.
Which one is better?

thanks and regards

1st line   It is not often said in this way

2nd line  More commonly said

3rd line   Not often said in this way

4th line   More commonly said

But , if you ask me , 'Is my car in my garage ? ' - I may answer ' There is no car in your garage .' Here you are referring to a particular ( or specific ) car.

Hello Mr. Yang,

I enjoyed listening to your program and I have two questions about English phrase.  The first one is "catch-22".  I heard this phrase from foreign news but I don't understand fully understand the meaning of it.  Can you explainit?

The second one is "Bobby on the beat".  I was selected as a juror several years back and a lawyer said this phrase during his questioning to a witness.  I can only guess the meaning based on the answer by the witness. Can you elaborate?

Thanks

William

  1. Catch 22 = 做也不是, 不做也不是 , 進退兩難

2. Bobby on the heat - Bobby 是警員 , beat = 巡邏
