The spokesperson made the remarks after Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi made a monetary offering to the Yasukuni Shrine on August 15, which marks the day of Japan's unconditional surrender in World War II, while certain cabinet members also visited the shrine.

During WWII, Japan launched the war of aggression and committed horrendous crimes, the spokesperson said, noting that as the spiritual tool and symbol of Japanese militarism, Yasukuni is, in fact, a shrine for war criminals, as it honours 14 convicted Class-A war criminals responsible for the war of aggression.

No pretext whatsoever can hide the Japanese politicians' true intention, which is to change the verdict on the war criminals, cover up Japan's war crimes, distort the historical facts, and pave the way for accelerating remilitarisation, the spokesperson said.

"This is an affront to historical justice, a challenge to the foundational norms of civilisation, and a provocation against the postwar international order. Such behaviours have been firmly rejected by the overwhelming majority of the international community," the spokesperson said.

Noting that this year marks the 80th anniversary of the opening of the Tokyo Trials, the spokesperson said to view and treat history correctly is an important prerequisite for Japan's postwar return to the international community, the political foundation for Japan's ties with neighbouring countries, and more importantly, a key measure for Japan's commitment to peaceful development.

"We urge the Japanese side to do serious soul-searching on its history of aggression, make a clean break with militarism, and earn trust from its Asian neighbours and the rest of the world with concrete actions," the spokesperson added.

Passed by the National People's Congress in March, the legal framework is China’s second formal code, following the Civil Code enacted in 2020.

Spanning five chapters with more than 1,200 articles, it covers key areas such as pollution control, ecological conservation, and green, low-carbon development.

In addition, it regulates new types of pollution - such as light, electromagnetic radiation, organic chemicals, and pharmaceuticals - while requiring companies to file annual emissions reports and register pollution-related facilities.

The code also turns the country’s “dual carbon” goals of peaking carbon emissions by 2030 and achieving carbon neutrality by 2060 from policy aspirations into statutory mandates.

Yau Wing-kwong, founder and chief executive officer of the Environmental Association, noted that the code effectively consolidated over 30 existing national environment-related statutes.

"It is really consolidating all these laws and making it easier for businesses and people to understand, and also easier to monitor and enforce,” he explained.

Yau pointed out the code also opens up greater scope for collaboration between Hong Kong and cities in the GBA.

"We have been building butterfly gardens in Hong Kong and also over the border with Shenzhen and even Macao. So the ecological corridor between butterflies or other species like birds and so on. They are already in practice,” he said.

“But again, conservation, study and citizen science - and getting people involved - can be enhanced and go further.”

Further cooperation, Yau noted, could also include research on renewable energy and waste recycling initiatives.

The company, Sea Legend, tested the premise last year when it completed the first China-to-Europe container ship transit through the frigid Northern Sea Route (NSR) along Russia's coastline.

The journey from the city of Ningbo to the English port of Felixstowe took 20 days, according to the company – about half the time it takes for shipments from China to Europe via the Suez Canal.

Sea Legend will become the first operator to run a regular container service through the NSR, for a seven-week period until October 3.

A Sea Legend ship called "Dubai Tower" will leave Ningbo for Felixstowe on Saturday night, an employee at the Ningbo-Zhoushan Port said on Friday.

Other shipping companies have transited the Arctic passage before, with Denmark's Maersk the first to do so in 2018.

The NSR saw a record 23 container transits in 2025, up from 15 the previous year, according to shipping analysis from business insurer Allianz Commercial published in June.

Analysts say the Arctic is an important future trade route, particularly for China, which in 2018 outlined its vision for greater access to the region through a "Polar Silk Road".

The period up to October 3 is "broadly aligned with the period when ships can expect to transit without icebreaker assistance", Niels Rasmussen, chief shipping analyst at the shipping lobby BIMCO, wrote in a note.

Sea Legend's departing ships, however, will carry less than 0.5 percent of the weekly container volume from East and Southeast Asia to North Europe, he said.

The limited duration of the service "is equal to less than 0.1 percent of the annual container volumes between the two regions", he added. (AFP)

The mudslide occurred around 6.30am in Changxing County and caused a house to collapse, Xinhua News Agency said.

A preliminary investigation showed that the mudslide was triggered by a flash flood after a sudden burst of heavy rain.

Rescue work was underway, Xinhua reported.

The nation is increasingly battling destructive weather that scientists link to climate change, especially this year, as an emerging El Niño pattern boosts temperatures and fuels more frequent and intense typhoons.

Natural disasters on the mainland in July, when the country was affected by typhoons Maysak, Bavi and Noul, left 318 people dead or missing and caused direct economic losses of 57.15 billion yuan, according to data released by the Ministry of Emergency Management.

Both numbers were higher compared with a year ago.

Typhoon Dolphin, which made landfall on Sunday, unleashed extreme rain across eastern, central and northern regions this week, breaking single-day rainfall records at 13 weather stations across the country.

In central Henan province, authorities were organising the evacuation of 781 people after a riverbank was breached late on Thursday in the city of Zhoukou, state broadcaster CCTV reported on Friday.

Remnants of Typhoon Dolphin, combined with cold air and a monsoon trough, are expected to bring more heavy rain in eastern and southeastern parts of the country from Friday to Sunday, CCTV said in a separate report.

A basin-wide major flood is expected in Lake Tai in the east, the country's third-largest freshwater lake and the origin of a number of rivers, according to CCTV. (Reuters)

Participants from more than 20 government departments travelled to the interchange using various modes of public transport, including buses, cross-boundary coaches, minibuses and taxis. They then made their way through the departure hall and arrival hall of the port building, before heading back to the interchange to leave by public transport.

The process was repeated in loops to simulate pedestrian and vehicle traffic, involving more than 120 vehicle trips.

Secretary for Security Chris Tang said the drill went smoothly and was "meticulously arranged", according to a government statement.

He noted that the drill covered passenger boarding and alighting, pedestrian and vehicle traffic management, terminal passageway capacity, signage clarity and barrier-free facilities. There were also simulations for passengers boarding and getting off taxis, buses and minibuses at the same time.

The security minister also said some participants pointed out issues regarding unclear signage and queue control. Tang said officials have taken note of the feedback and will follow up with improvements.

He added that stress tests will continue at the border checkpoint almost daily to ensure safe and smooth operations when the port officially opens to the public.

Secretary for Transport and Logistics Mable Chan was also there to inspect the drill.

She said her bureau will review and improve the transport arrangements, to ensure a highly efficient transport network once port operations begin.

Chan also said Zhu had always cared deeply for Hong Kong, backing the city's efforts to tackle challenges and resolutely defending its status as an international financial hub during the Asian financial crisis.

Recalling Zhu's four visits to Hong Kong, Chan said his down-to-earth style and sense of humour left a lasting impression on the people of Hong Kong.

The former premier passed away on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, former chairwoman of the Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing Laura Cha described Zhu as a determined reformer who dedicated himself fully to the nation's economic development.

The inaugural flight, CA723, departed from Beijing Capital International Airport at around 3pm, before arriving at Chinggis Khaan International Airport in Ulaanbaatar at around 5.15pm.

Meanwhile, the return flight, CA724, was scheduled to depart from Ulaanbaatar at 7pm and arrive in Beijing at around 9pm.

The route will operate daily.

Speaking in an interview with RTHK in Beijing, a tourist surnamed Jiang noted that it was his first time to take a flight using the domestically developed C919.

"I feel very excited. Previously I didn't know [that we're taking the C919 passenger jet], but our tour guide just told us about it.

"I've always wanted to experience the C919 jet, and fortunately, I got the chance to do so today," he said.

Separately, a passenger from Taiwan, surnamed Tang, said he looked forward to visiting Mongolia after travelling in Beijing over the past few days.

"I haven't taken a C919 flight before. I think it'll be very memorable," he told RTHK.

Another visitor, surnamed Peng, believed the new route marked an important step for the C919 as it embarks on routes abroad.

The C919 is the country's first large passenger jetliner, developed in accordance with international standards and with independent intellectual property rights.

It is 38.9 metres long, 3.96 metres wide and 11.95 metres high, with a capacity to carry 158 passengers.

As of August 10, the C919 passenger jet was serving 57 routes linking 25 cities, including Harbin, Xi'an, Chengdu, Chongqing, Wuhan, Changsha, Guangzhou, Xiamen, Hangzhou and Shanghai, handling more than 7.5 million passenger trips, according to official data.

The aircraft also completed its first scheduled commercial flight outside the mainland from Shanghai to Hong Kong on January 1, 2025.

It's currently operated by Air China, China Eastern Airlines and China Southern Airlines, according to its developer, the Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China.

From Tuesday evening through Thursday, most areas in the capital will experience heavy downpours with a cumulative rainfall of over 100 millimetres in six hours and more than 150mm in 24 hours, according to the city's meteorological service.

The cumulative rainfall in districts including Tongzhou, Daxing, Fangshan, Mentougou, Huairou and Fengtai may exceed 200mm in 24 hours.

That compares with Beijing's average annual rainfall of 528mm, the bulk of which is concentrated in the months between June and September.

Beijing issued an orange alert for rainstorms at 10am on Monday, while several districts, including Fangshan, Daxing and Tongzhou, issued the highest-level red alerts.

Authorities said residents in high-risk areas would be evacuated by Tuesday evening.

Construction work will be suspended, and mountain campsites and scenic areas will be closed.

Starting Wednesday, employers are encouraged to adopt flexible working hours or staggered schedules.

Schools may suspend classes and in-person training depending on conditions, while organised outdoor sports activities will be halted.

Beijing's drainage authorities have put 252 flood-control teams on standby.

Preparations, including the installation of flood barriers, have also been stepped up at 368 subway stations, 33 hospital campuses and 17 elderly care facilities. (Xinhua/Reuters)

In the first half of 2026, the city's trade with other Apec economies rose 33 percent to 1.98 trillion yuan, accounting for 68.8 percent of its total foreign trade, Xinhua News Agency reported.

Authorities have also reported a travel boom.

The number of arrivals and departures involving travellers from Apec economies has surpassed 3.5 million this year, a 24 percent increase from a year ago.

As of August 4, the total number of foreign arrivals and departures via Shenzhen had topped 5 million.

Shenzhen is also touted as one of the country's leading centres for emerging industries.

The National Development and Reform Commission on Monday announced that it has allocated 200 million yuan from the central government budget to support disaster recovery efforts in Zhejiang province following the devastation caused by the typhoon.

The funds will be primarily used for the emergency restoration of damaged infrastructure, including roads and water conservancy facilities, as well as public service facilities such as schools and hospitals, it said.

Typhoon Dolphin made its second landfall at Yueqing City in Zhejiang at around 6.40pm on Sunday, about an hour after it first landed at Yuhuan in Taizhou City.

The Ministry of Water Resources has maintained a Level-III emergency response in Zhejiang, as well as a Level-IV response for six other provincial-level regions across eastern, central and northeastern China, instructing local authorities to strengthen monitoring and research efforts and step up patrols to detect and address potential hazards.

It said that priority will be given to flood defence along small and medium-sized rivers and the prevention of mountain torrents.

Also on Monday, the Ministry of Finance and Ministry of Emergency Management allocated 180 million yuan from the central natural disaster relief fund to support disaster-hit areas across the country.

Of the total, 120 million yuan was earmarked for five provinces – Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Anhui, Fujian, and Jiangxi – to support emergency response and rescue efforts following the flooding and typhoon damage.

The remaining funding was allocated to Inner Mongolia and Xinjiang to address ongoing drought conditions.

The National Meteorological Center (NMC) forecasts that from 8pm on Monday to 8pm on Tuesday, parts of Zhejiang, Jiangsu, Anhui, Henan and Hubei provinces will see torrential rain, with extraordinarily heavy rainstorms to hit southern Henan and northwestern Hubei.

While the moving speed of Typhoon Dolphin will slow down significantly after Tuesday, its remnant vortex is expected to linger and stall over the border areas of Hubei, Henan and Anhui provinces, triggering a new round of regional heavy rainfall, the NMC said.

With the rain belt moving further northward, the NMC forecasts that from August 11 to 13, the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region in northern China will experience heavy rainfall, with the capital Beijing to see heavy to torrential rain during the period. (Reporting by Xinhua)

The weather system has lost power after making two landfalls along the coast of Zhejiang province on Sunday, with National Meteorological Center issuing its least severe typhoon alert on Monday morning.

However, it warned that parts of east and central China would continue to receive heavy rain for the next day.

Authorities issued their most severe flash flood alert for parts of eastern and southern Zhejiang on Monday, broadcaster CCTV said.

Shanghai's two main passenger airports saw 943 flights cancelled, the airport authority said in an online post.

Public transport services, including many local trains, have been suspended in the financial hub.

Zhejiang's Ningbo international airport will resume flight operations from midday but warned that some journeys may still be delayed or cancelled since the effects of the typhoon have "not yet completely dissipated".

Provincial capital Hangzhou resumed subway services on Monday morning, after halting some train operations on Sunday.

Northern parts of the country are also set for extreme weather this week, with five districts in Beijing issuing red alerts for heavy rain on Monday, with some warning of landslide and flooding risks.

Typhoon Dolphin triggered a top-level alert over the weekend, prompting over 1,000 flight cancellations and tens of thousands of evacuations.

It came two weeks after Typhoon Noul struck Guangdong, with authorities saying at the time that it was the strongest storm to hit China this year.

Extreme weather also wreaked havoc on southern and central China last month, with 39 people killed when Typhoon Maysak triggered devastating floods in the southern Guangxi region.

Maysak also caused thunderstorms and gale-force winds that killed 11 people and injured 331 in the central province of Hubei. (AFP)

After invalid bids and the highest-priced portion of proposed subscriptions were excluded, the remaining proposed offline subscriptions totaled 71.463 billion shares, 2,760.67 times the initial offline offering size before adjustment for strategic placement, according to the issuance announcement.

According to its prospectus, Unitree mainly develops, produces and sells high-performance general-purpose humanoid and quadruped robots, robot components and embodied intelligence models.

On its official website, Unitree describes itself as a civilian robotics company with leadership in core robot parts, motion control, robot sensing and other comprehensive fields.

The prospectus shows that from 2023 to 2025, Unitree sold 33,294 quadruped robots and 5,632 humanoid robots.

Its humanoid robot shipments exceeded 5,500 units in 2025, excluding wheeled dual-arm robots.

The nation's securities regulator approved Unitree's IPO registration application in a decision dated July 1. (Xinhua)

With Hong Kong preparing to come up with its first five-year plan, Lam said expanding clinical trials is key to turning the city into a major health and medical innovation hub.

In an interview with RTHK, the lawmaker spoke about the growth potential in collaborating with Shenzhen, citing a population of more than 80 million in the mainland cities of the Greater Bay Area compared with 7.5 million in Hong Kong.

“With more patients, with a bigger patient base, that means you can do the research quicker, so you can finish your clinical trial quicker, and then you can also radiate to other places. For a clinical trial that's useful for registering a drug, you need kind of international clinical trials,” he said.

“So to start with, if we start here and we have a population base of over 80 million, that makes clinical trial much easier than a population of 7.5 million. Eighty million is already more than the population of many countries in the world.”

While half of the world's top 10 pharmaceutical companies, including Pfizer and AstraZeneca, have set up shop in Hong Kong, Lam said the government could do more to attract others to come here.

Officials could, for instance, consider offering drugs developed at the Hetao zone the priority to be registered under the Hong Kong Centre for the Medical Products Regulation, he said.

The centre, which is expected to be set up by the end of this year, will directly approve applications for registration of medical products in the city based on clinical trial data, without relying on approval from other drug regulatory authorities.

“If we can prioritise what we innovate, what we take part in developing, that is only reasonable. Otherwise, why should people come here for R&D? R&D is very expensive, and Hong Kong is no cheap place for R&D. So that’s the upstream, you provide the infrastructure for them to develop R&D," Lam said.

"Mid-stream will be the clinical trials. We collaborate with Hetao area, the entire GBA, to project our clinical trials to the entire 80 million people.

"And then the downstream is the registration and the marketing.”

He added that local universities and the Hospital Authority can contribute to the clinical trials by, for example, taking part in the R&D efforts and adding to the patient base with those receiving public healthcare services.

Looking ahead, the lawmaker said he expects the movement of data and specimens at Hetao to become smoother over the next five years.

“Hetao is a zone where the transition or the movement of these materials and resources should be much more easier. It’s a contained area, but it consists of people and talents from both sides of the border. So together, they can pull together all the resources, all the data and all the specimens, and make all the research much faster and more efficient.”

The two-month public consultation for the city’s first inaugural five-year plan ends on Friday.

Dolphin made landfall at Yuhuan of Taizhou City at about 5.30pm, packing maximum sustained winds of 42 metres per second (151 km/h), according to the National Meteorological Center (NMC).

It made a second landfall at Yueqing City at around 6.40pm.

Transport was widely disrupted across the east of the country and more than one million people were evacuated from their homes.

Nearly 1,400 flights in and out of Shanghai's two main passenger airports were cancelled on Sunday, CCTV reported, whereas Hangzhou's airport saw 270 inbound and outbound flights cancelled.

The NMC issued the highest red typhoon alert on Sunday morning. It warned local authorities in the affected areas to guard against extreme downpours.

Torrential rain is forecast through Monday across Zhejiang, Shanghai, northern Fujian, northeastern Jiangxi, central and southern Anhui, and much of Jiangsu.

The core CPI, which excludes food and energy prices, increased 0.9 percent year on year, according to the bureau.

Influenced by international imported factors, CPI in July edged down 0.1 percent on a month-by-month basis, the NBS data revealed.

Sunday's data also showed that China's producer price index, which measures costs for goods at the factory gate, went up 3.5 percent year on year in July.

Commenting on the data, Zhang Zhiwei, President and Chief Economist of Pinpoint Asset Management, said momentum appeared to have softened in the second quarter.

Zhang also wrote that a meeting of the Politburo in late July "signalled stronger fiscal spending as the policy response", adding that a couple of months are needed to assess how it may boost domestic demand.

The latest figures come two days after trade data for July showed exports and imports soaring, boosted by increased overseas demand for AI-related tech products. (Xinhua/AFP)

In an interview, Simon Stiell, executive secretary of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), said his latest trip to China was aimed at gauging real world progress, stressing that practical implementation of climate policies is often more revealing than numerical data alone.

"I mean, it's sharing where we need to get to certainly by the end of this year within the climate negotiations, understanding what the priorities of China are... and there is always far more actually taking place in reality, in practice, than is always reflected in presenting numbers. It's always good to get a sense of what is really happening here," Stiell said.

A frequent visitor to China, Stiell noted that what struck him most on this trip was the palpable energy driving sustainable development across sectors. While his Beijing itinerary did not include private sector meetings, he had held talks with business representatives in Hong Kong before travelling to the capital.

"It's just the energy... I was in Hong Kong and I did get to meet with the private sector there. And there's some incredible things that have been sent within the financial markets and how they're supporting sustainable development. But it's the vibrancy, it is that can-do attitude," he said.

Reflecting on China's consistent progress over the decades, Stiell expressed admiration for the country's clear strategic direction and sustained momentum.

"When you have an understanding of China's longer term development trajectory, you know the progress that has been made decade after decade after decade, that determination to move a country in a very clear developmental path is absolutely astonishing. So taking that energy, how that energy can be transferred to my travels around the world is something that is certainly motivating," he said. (CCTV)

The storm was about 160 kilometres northwest of Kume Island in Okinawa as of 11am, moving northwest at 15 kilometres per hour, the Japan Meteorological Agency said.

The National Meteorological Centre said Typhoon Dolphin was expected to make landfall along the country's eastern and southern coast between late Sunday and early Monday, most likely between Zhoushan city, Zhejiang, and Fuding city in Fujian.

It is expected to bring winds of around 136 to 162 kmh near its centre.

Rain and strong winds are expected to affect eastern China through August 12, including parts of Shanghai and neighbouring provinces. Some areas of eastern Zhejiang could receive more than 600 millimetres of rain, according to forecasters.

Zhejiang raised its coastal typhoon alert to its highest level, halted port operations and suspended 162 passenger ferry routes.

Ningbo Lishe International Airport in Zhejiang said it will halt operations from 11.30pm on Saturday and suspend all flights on Sunday. Shanghai's Yangshan port had been cleared of vessels by late Friday, while some rail services in the Yangtze River Delta will be suspended from Sunday.

In Taiwan, 63 flights were cancelled because of the typhoon.

The Okinawan prefectural government said five elderly people suffered non-life-threatening injuries, with three falling due to the wind. Domestic airlines ANA and Japan Airlines cancelled flights to the region.

The typhoon had maximum sustained winds of 162 kmh with gusts reaching 216 kmh.
